Yumi Jang

Piano, 29, New York, USA, Instructed by Kyung Kim

Pianist Yumi Jang has an illustrious international career as a concerto soloist, recitalist, and chamber musician. She has performed at esteemed venues worldwide, including the Mirabel Palace in Austria (with the Salzburg Mirabel Chamber Orchestra), the Seoul Arts Center in South Korea, the Miriam A. Friedberg Concert Hall, Hilda and Douglas Goodwin Recital Hall, and Shriver Hall in Maryland, USA, Paul Davenport Theatre and von Kuster Hall in Ontario, Canada. Yumi has garnered recognition for her expressive playing and dynamic performances as a soloist and ensemble musician.

Yumi's recent wins include the New York International Music Competition and the New York Laureate International Music Competition. She has also earned first prizes and other accolades at numerous other competitions, such as the International Piano Competition, the Absolute Platinum Prize at the Canadian International Music Competition, the "London" Grand Prize Virtuoso International Music Competition, the Charleston International Music Competition, the 21st Century Talents Music Competition, the Global International Music Competition, the North American Virtuoso International Competition Gold Prize, the 2022 "Pianist of the Year" European Classical Music Grand Prix award, the International European Classical Music Pianist Award Competition Gold Prize, and the International European Autumn Competition Gold Prize and Country Representative Winner. She has also been awarded top honors at the Asia Chopin International Competition, Hong Kong Asia Open International Piano Competition (Youth class and Schumann categories), International Mozart Competition Vienna, and Korea/France Art & Culture International Exchange Association National Music Competition.

Yumi began studying piano at the age of four and quickly gained prominence in her native South Korea, winning numerous awards and performing widely. She completed her undergraduate degree at Yonsei University in South Korea before earning her Master of Music degree at the Peabody Institute of the Johns Hopkins University in the USA. She then pursued doctoral studies with Dr. Kyung Kim at the University of Minnesota Twin-Cities before transferring to Western University (Ontario, Canada), where she is currently a graduate teaching assistant and a candidate for the Doctor of Musical Arts degree in the studio of Dr. Kyung Kim.

Yumi is scheduled to perform at Royal Albert Hall in London, UK in April and at Lincoln Center Plaza and Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall in New York, USA in December.

Pei Wu Derek Chen

Violin, 21, Maryland, USA, Instructed by Judith Ingolfsson

Age 20-24

Pei Wu Derek Chen is a violinist with the Nosremé Quartet. He started playing violin at the age of 8. In 2013, he appeared as a soloist for the first time, performing Vivaldi’s Violin Concerto with the Changhua Philharmonic at the age of 11. He is currently pursuing his Bachelor of Music degree at the Peabody Conservatory under the tutelage of the renowned violinist Judith Ingolfsson.

Pei Wu served as the concertmaster of the Changhua Children String Orchestra and the Changhua Philharmonic from 2013-2014. He was awarded the first prize of the National Piano Quintet Music Competition consecutively during 2016-2017. Additionally, Pei Wu was selected as one of the members of 2017 NTSO (National Taiwan Symphony Orchestra) International Youth Orchestra and performed as the youngest musician.

Noticed for his tremendous passion for music, Pei Wu was later invited and sponsored by the city government to hold his first violin recital at the City Hall. 
Recent musical awards Pei Wu received include the Grand Prize of the 2023 American Soloist International Music Competition and the second prize of the 2022 String Avenue International Competition, where he was invited to perform the winner’s concert at the Hall of the National Polish Radio Symphony Orchestra. Pei Wu is the winner of the VI Rising Star Competition held by the Peabody Taiwanese Alumni Association.

In the coming summer, Pei Wu will be traveling with the Nosremé Quartet to the inaugural Texas Chamber Music Institute, where they have been named the quartet-in-residence. Pei Wu will also be joining the PRISMA Music Festival and the Ascent Music Festival on a full-scholarship.

Hannah Chen

Harp, 16, California, USA, Instructed by Jennifer Ellis

Age 14-16

Hannah Chen is a 16 year old composer and harpist studying at Oakland School for the Arts and San Francisco Conservatory of Music Pre-College. Hannah serves as the principal harpist of the San Francisco Symphony Youth Orchestra and has also been the harpist for the Contra Costa Wind Symphony. She has won 1st prize in the BACHAS Yvonne LaMothe Schwager Competition, 1st in the USIMC competition, and 1st in the Charleston International Baroque Competition. She has also been a prizewinner in the American Harp Society National Competition. As a composer, Hannah’s compositions have been performed and premiered by Argus Quartet, Music at the Mission’s Chamberfest, and Wildflower Composers Camp. Her work has been recognized by the Bay Area Creative Foundation Creative Youth Awards and the SFCM Kris Getz Competition. She is also very interested in film scoring and music technology, and has been in summer programs from Berklee College of Music and the SFCM Technology and Applied Composition Immersive.

Avery Armstrong

Piano, 10, California, USA, Instructed by Annamarie McCarthy

Avery Armstrong has studied at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music's Pre-College Division since the age of six where she began with Annamarie McCarthy and currently studies with Dr. Chia-Lin Yang. She has participated in numerous international competitions and recitals, including First Prize in 2023 KAMSA Competition, Third Prize in Pacific Musical Society and Foundation, First Prize in 2022 Chicago International Music Competition, First Prize in 2022 USIMC (United States International Music Competition), First Prize in 2022 International New Star Piano Competition, Grand Prize in 2022 Prodigy International Music Competition, Grand Prize in 2022 New York Laureate International Music Competition, Grand Prize in 2022 New York International Young Musician Competition, Grand Prize in 2022 New York International Classical Music Competition, First Prize in 2022 Elite International Music Competition, First Prize in 2022 Crescendo International Music Competition, First Prize in American Protégé International Piano and Strings Competition, and more.

Avery loves performing, and in addition to enjoying playing with other musicians she has performed at many charity events she has performed three times at Carnegie Hall in New York.
